In this blog, I will examine the news of inappropriate relationships in the workplace. On November 3, the US Eastern time, McDonald’s announced the dismissal of CEO Steve Easterbrook because Easterbrook violated the company’s policy and had intimate relations with unnamed employees. Easterbrook’s dismissal is, in fact, because of the violation of the company’s internal non-fraternization policy—having a proper relationship between labours in workplaces. And I think although the dismissal of employees will cause a massive loss to the corporation, the corporation should hold a zero-tolerance attitude on this issue.

This issue may affect several employees and employers in McDonald’s; the corporation’s reputation will also be involved. Because the subject in this incident is the CEO of the company, so his mistakes will have a substantial negative impact on the company, which is irreversible for a while. According to the management value and ideology in the book, “The values and beliefs of the original owner of a company could affect the firm’s approach to unions, and the values of key managers toward unions could also impact the employer’s labour relations strategy.” (Suffield and Gannon, 51) Finally, as McDonald’s is a well-known company with considerable influence, the concern of the relationship between labours in workplaces will also expand and affect the entire American industry

In my opinion, this issue is mainly due to the manager himself. As he doesn’t pay enough attention to the company’s management policies, or worse, the manager chooses to ignore the regulations. It is supported by the news report, which mentions that: The CEP demonstrated poor judgment involving a recent consensual relationship with an employee.

Furthermore, this issue will negatively influence the working environment in this corporation. First of all, as mentioned before, the main reason beneath this dismissal is managers neglecting the corporation’s policy. According to the textbook, the system of the labour union has a noticeable impact on labour relations(Suffield and Gannon, 51). The misbehaviour of the company manager will provide a negative role model for the employees; as the employees also tend to violate the company policy if their manager violates it. This dismissal will also make female employees worry about their safety and consistently keep distances from managers; and thus lower their working efficiency.

This situation should be dealt with carefully as a relationship in the workplace usually involves more than two people. And in this case, the dismissal of a manager is, in fact, the company’s huge loss. Because it takes the company a significant amount of time and money to cultivate a manager, it is necessary to have a zero-tolerance attitude towards similar behaviours, which violate the company’s policies. All the employees should be punished equally regardless of the position of the subject; to establish a healthy and legal workplace environment that attaches responsibility and fairness for the company.

What are these problems?

When searching on the internet about the issues raised by employees in the workplace, I noticed that there are many inappropriate behaviors in the working area, including sexual Harassment and bully, towards employees. Workplace bullying is a repeated and unreasonable physical and psychological behavior directed towards a worker or a group of workers that creates a risk to health and safety. Sexual Harassment refers to the unwelcome and unacceptable behaviors that intimidate, offends, or humiliates toward particular groups of individuals because of the specific characteristic such as age, race, gender, disability, religion, or sexual orientation.

In this blog, I will briefly demonstrate the inappropriate behaviors in employment and workplaces in Canada, and its numerous negative influences on the employees. Such inappropriate actions will cause severe mental problems because they will violate employees’ rights. On a personal level, individuals will suffer adverse effects from someone’s aggressive conduct; even if he is not the direct target, he would still be inflected by others. On a Workplace level, An individual’s attitude and physical health caused by inappropriate behaviors can have a tangible influence on profitability and the efficiency of works.

Sexual Harrassment?

Next, I will examine cases of sexual Harassment by analyzing specific cases. For example, 81% of women reported experiencing some forms of sexual Harassment; the most common cases are offering benefits for sexual favor, which often happen between the manager who has a valuable source and the employee, and unwanted and intended sexual advancements(See the picture below). Therefore, most of the employees chose not to make their sexual harassment experiences public, their views of these inappropriate behaviors is silence, and still on the stage of struggling. The impact of this kind of improper action is problematic. The sexual Harassment seriously interferes with the healthy life of women. Sexual Harassment from bosses has also resulted in demotion, pay cuts and unfair treatment, and other degradation for the women. Thus, A woman who repeated being suffered from sexual Harassment by the leadership can lead to a loss of self-confidence, fear, autism, and nervousness. The resulting damage to women tends to affect their probability toward the company and personal income. Damage corporate reputation and employee career. Sexual Harassment can make the work environment hostile, and the relationships in the workplace deteriorate rapidly. The profession is severely hindered by the bad behavior of the boss, which is the negative barrier to the career development of women in the workplace. The company’s reputation and management ability will be questioned and denied, prompting competent employees to leave. Break the trust between the employees and the manager. If the manager’s words and deeds are lowly sexual Harassment, then employees will immediately no longer trust the boss and the company.

The Bully?

The bully in the workplace is another severe problem. The hostile use of aggression, threats, forces by employers makes employees feel fear and anxiety, to achieve the purposes of controlling others. It also caused by two main characterizes inequivalent and reduplicative behaviors. The relation between the bullying conduct is not just the different authority, too can between the same level of individuals. A case supports this that A Facebook employee committed suicide because of toxic workplace enviornment and cultural acceptance.

Next, I will examine the impacts brought by such inappropriate behaviors. Employee’s self-denial, having trouble making a decision, reducing his incapacity to work or concentrate, lowing his self-esteem and productivity. Break the trust between employees and the manager. If the manager’s words and deeds are lowly sexual Harassment, then employees will immediately no longer trust the boss and the company.

How to address these problems?

I will provide two possible resolutions for sexual Harassment. Firstly, employers should ensure that offenders are severely punished. For the employees, I also consider it necessary to establish sexual education classes.

When it comes to workplace bully, I strongly suggest that the employees should establish feedback channels, for example, create a safe environment for victims to reflect what they are experiencing, either anonymously or face to face. For those employees who have mental problems, employers should encourage them to do psychological consultation.

Introduce Yourself (Example Post)

This is an example post, originally published as part of Blogging University. Enroll in one of our ten programs, and start your blog right.

You’re going to publish a post today. Don’t worry about how your blog looks. Don’t worry if you haven’t given it a name yet, or you’re feeling overwhelmed. Just click the “New Post” button, and tell us why you’re here.

Why do this?

  • Because it gives new readers context. What are you about? Why should they read your blog?
  • Because it will help you focus you own ideas about your blog and what you’d like to do with it.

The post can be short or long, a personal intro to your life or a bloggy mission statement, a manifesto for the future or a simple outline of your the types of things you hope to publish.

To help you get started, here are a few questions:

  • Why are you blogging publicly, rather than keeping a personal journal?
  • What topics do you think you’ll write about?
  • Who would you love to connect with via your blog?
  • If you blog successfully throughout the next year, what would you hope to have accomplished?

You’re not locked into any of this; one of the wonderful things about blogs is how they constantly evolve as we learn, grow, and interact with one another — but it’s good to know where and why you started, and articulating your goals may just give you a few other post ideas.

Can’t think how to get started? Just write the first thing that pops into your head. Anne Lamott, author of a book on writing we love, says that you need to give yourself permission to write a “crappy first draft”. Anne makes a great point — just start writing, and worry about editing it later.

When you’re ready to publish, give your post three to five tags that describe your blog’s focus — writing, photography, fiction, parenting, food, cars, movies, sports, whatever. These tags will help others who care about your topics find you in the Reader. Make sure one of the tags is “zerotohero,” so other new bloggers can find you, too.
