What are these problems?

When searching on the internet about the issues raised by employees in the workplace, I noticed that there are many inappropriate behaviors in the working area, including sexual Harassment and bully, towards employees. Workplace bullying is a repeated and unreasonable physical and psychological behavior directed towards a worker or a group of workers that creates a risk to health and safety. Sexual Harassment refers to the unwelcome and unacceptable behaviors that intimidate, offends, or humiliates toward particular groups of individuals because of the specific characteristic such as age, race, gender, disability, religion, or sexual orientation.

In this blog, I will briefly demonstrate the inappropriate behaviors in employment and workplaces in Canada, and its numerous negative influences on the employees. Such inappropriate actions will cause severe mental problems because they will violate employees’ rights. On a personal level, individuals will suffer adverse effects from someone’s aggressive conduct; even if he is not the direct target, he would still be inflected by others. On a Workplace level, An individual’s attitude and physical health caused by inappropriate behaviors can have a tangible influence on profitability and the efficiency of works.

Sexual Harrassment?

Next, I will examine cases of sexual Harassment by analyzing specific cases. For example, 81% of women reported experiencing some forms of sexual Harassment; the most common cases are offering benefits for sexual favor, which often happen between the manager who has a valuable source and the employee, and unwanted and intended sexual advancements(See the picture below). Therefore, most of the employees chose not to make their sexual harassment experiences public, their views of these inappropriate behaviors is silence, and still on the stage of struggling. The impact of this kind of improper action is problematic. The sexual Harassment seriously interferes with the healthy life of women. Sexual Harassment from bosses has also resulted in demotion, pay cuts and unfair treatment, and other degradation for the women. Thus, A woman who repeated being suffered from sexual Harassment by the leadership can lead to a loss of self-confidence, fear, autism, and nervousness. The resulting damage to women tends to affect their probability toward the company and personal income. Damage corporate reputation and employee career. Sexual Harassment can make the work environment hostile, and the relationships in the workplace deteriorate rapidly. The profession is severely hindered by the bad behavior of the boss, which is the negative barrier to the career development of women in the workplace. The company’s reputation and management ability will be questioned and denied, prompting competent employees to leave. Break the trust between the employees and the manager. If the manager’s words and deeds are lowly sexual Harassment, then employees will immediately no longer trust the boss and the company.

The Bully?

The bully in the workplace is another severe problem. The hostile use of aggression, threats, forces by employers makes employees feel fear and anxiety, to achieve the purposes of controlling others. It also caused by two main characterizes inequivalent and reduplicative behaviors. The relation between the bullying conduct is not just the different authority, too can between the same level of individuals. A case supports this that A Facebook employee committed suicide because of toxic workplace enviornment and cultural acceptance.

Next, I will examine the impacts brought by such inappropriate behaviors. Employee’s self-denial, having trouble making a decision, reducing his incapacity to work or concentrate, lowing his self-esteem and productivity. Break the trust between employees and the manager. If the manager’s words and deeds are lowly sexual Harassment, then employees will immediately no longer trust the boss and the company.

How to address these problems?

I will provide two possible resolutions for sexual Harassment. Firstly, employers should ensure that offenders are severely punished. For the employees, I also consider it necessary to establish sexual education classes.

When it comes to workplace bully, I strongly suggest that the employees should establish feedback channels, for example, create a safe environment for victims to reflect what they are experiencing, either anonymously or face to face. For those employees who have mental problems, employers should encourage them to do psychological consultation.

  1. Hi Heather! I really enjoyed reading your post! I am also a firm believer that sexual harassment in the workplace has become a large problem. I really liked your solutions to the problems. I think they are very realistic and should be implemented in every workplace. Why do you think that females are more often the target for this behaviour than men? Do you think a female-only work environment would decrease the amount of sexual harassment? I look forward to hearing back from you! Great work!

    1. hello 18KCH! That is a good point. Actually I planned to write about sexual harassment towards male but you know, word limit, only 500 words. But I choose to focus on females mainly because I noticed that there are more cases on female sexual harassment when searching. However, we do need to pay equal attention to male sexual harassment. While I agree that a female-only work environment will decrease the amount of sexual harassment. But I sexual harassment will still exist. The most important thing is to create a better working environment.

  2. Hi Heather, I like reading your post because you used very specific and well-round statement to express your idea, and the bully problem in the working place is a problem which is very severe in our daily life. And I agree with the solution that you give to this problem. I think the feedback channel is important for workers to reveal their working conditions.
